SC to hear actress Priya’s petition on Wednesday

New Delhi, Feb 20 : The Supreme Court on Tuesday said it would hear the petition filed by actress Priya Prakash Varrier seeking quashing of the FIRs registered against her for her role in the film “OruAdaarLove” in Telangana on Wednesday.

A three-judge bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra and also comprising Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud, said and agreed to hear the matter on Wednesday.

Priya and the movie director approached the Supreme Court and wanted the FIR and all criminal proceedings quashed over a song in her movie.

Actress, Priya Prakash Varrier, had on Monday approached the Supreme Court and filed a plea against a case registered against her for her film “OruAdaarLove” in Telangana.

Priya, in her petition filed through her Supreme Court lawyer, Harish Beeran, claimed and cited that the case against her was against the Freedom of Speech and Expression.

Priya, in her petition, claimed that the song of the film, in which the wink featured, was written almost 40 years ago and has been sung by Muslim community all along without any protest.

Actress Priya, approached the apex court seeking quashing of many FIRs filed against her in various places because of the wink featured in the film.

She cited the case of actress Khushboo, in which the apex court had quashed all the cases against her following her comment on virginity.

Priya, in her petition said, a song which has been in existence for 40 years and cherished all along by Muslim community cannot suddenly become offend their religious sentiment.
The song has been sung by the Muslim community all along without any kind of protest, she added in her petition.
