Hyderabad, Oct.9 : A sexagenarian Maoist couple — K. Purshottam alias Vijay alias Sharath Chandra, 68, and his wife K. Vinodini alias Vijayalaxmi, 63, surrendered before Hyderabad City Police Commissioner Anjani Kumar here this afternoon.
Addressing the media here today, the Commissioner said the two naxalites are residents of Secunderabad working in the outfit with RCM status of Agitation propaganda committee (APC) printing publishing unit CPI (Maoist) party. Purshottam joined the party in 1981 at the age of 31. He was a student of Bachelor of Oriental Language (BOL) in Andhra Saraswatha Parishad, Osmania University, in 1974 and had done his MA History in 1987 in Open University.
Purushotham hails from a middle class Kuruma family. His parents died before he joined the extremist party. He worked as head master in Ambedkar Vidaniketan Upper Primary School at Addagutta, East Marredpally, Secunderabad in 1981and came into contact with late Mojulla Koteshwar Rao alias Kishan G alias K G Satyamurthi. After his marriage with Vinodini, Vijay worked as city committee member of Hyderabad and promoted as city committee secretary from 1981 to 1986. During this period, the couple recruited some 60 cadre into the party and sent them to forest for training.
His wife Vinodini alias Vijaya Laxmi alias Bharatakka, of Madiga caste, a resident of Addagutta, Secunderabad, worked as a teacher in private schools in Addagutta and married Vijay in 1982 and joined the extremist party at the age of 27 and became UG. She also worked as a teacher in a private school in Krishna Nagar in Jubilee Hills as cover job till 1986. Later, the couple was transferred to Visakhapatnam. There she worked as teacher in a private school at Akkipalem from 1987 to 1991 as a cover job and assisted in cadre recruitment. Later the couple was transferred to Visakhapatnam where Vijay served as City Committee secretary from 1986 to 1996.
The couple was arrested in March 1991 at Visakhapatnam along with late Nimmaluri Bhaskar Rao SCM and Sammi Reddy DCM. They were released in May 1991 among four Maoists by then government over Maoists demand to release them after they kidnapped Punjala Sudheer Kumar, Youth Congress secretary, son of former Union minister P Shiv Shankar. They rejoined the party in 1991 and worked up to 1996 at Visakhapatnam as State committee member. From 1997 to 2000, they handled Agitation Propaganda Committee of Printing “Kranthi” and other political documents of the party.
From 1996 to 2005, Purushotham worked in Sub-Committee on Political Education (SCOPE) as member under guidance of Central committee of Tamil Nadu. From 2005 to 2014, the party directed the couple to stay in Chennai and not given any responsibility. The couple shifted to Hyderabad in 2014 and staying without exposure. Vinodini fell sick due to Rhematoid Arthritis and diabetics and since last year she was suffering from Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia (CML)
Attracted by the surrender policy of the State government, Purushotham surrendered before the city police commissioner citing wife’s ill-health and wanted to join in the mainstream and lead a peaceful life.
Purushotham said selfishness increased among the present leadership of Maoist party and opted to surrender along with his wife as the Maoist leadership neglected them and health was not cooperating with them. He also said he participated in 1969 and 1972 Telangana movements. He said they were deceived by the party though Vinodini was suffering from severe ill health. He said it was not correct on the part of Maoists to kill two public representatives.
