Hyderabad, June 1 : Minister for MA&UD K.T. Rama Rao and Herrick Soleheim, Under-Secretary General of United Nations and Executive Director of UN Environment, flagged off Electrical Vehicles at a function organized at the People’s Plaza today.
On the occasion, GHMC Mayor Dr Bonthu Rammohan, Deputy Mayor Baba Fasiuddin, Corporator Vijaya Reddy, Special Chief Secretary Ajay Mishra, GHMC Commissioner Dr B. Janardhan Reddy, ZC Central Bharathi Holikeri, Addl. Commissioner Musharaf Ali and senior officials of various Departments were present.
On the occasion, KTR welcomed Herrick Soleheim and thanked him for sparing his time for the cause of Pollution-Free Environment. He said the State government was planning to take electric vehicle policy soon for pollution free environment. He also stated that the State government has launched a number of programs for restoration of ecological and environmental balance like the Telanganaku Harithaharam program in which over 230 crore saplings were being planted in five years to enhance green cover from 22% to 23%. He said the project was not only for planting saplings but also Geo tapping all the locations and monitoring to yield good results. He pointed out that over 46,000 lakes and tanks in the State were being protected at a cost of Rs 541 crore and Hyderabad will be plastic free city and State by 2022. The GHMC has also taken up LED street lighting replacing all the 4,20,000 streetlights and 47% of the electrical bills drastically reduced, he added. The HMR project at L.B.Nagar will also be opened to the public by July end and the works pertaining to HMR will also be taken up at Hi-tech City very soon for the convenience of the citizens of that area, he said.
Herrick Soleheim also spoke. He greeted the gathering with Swachh Namaskaram and remembered Father of Nation Mahatma Gandhi and his slogan “cleanliness is next to Godliness” and also Swachh Bharath Mission of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Vision. He also said there will be full support from the United Nations and UN Environment for taking up various initiatives for pollution free environment in the near future. He also praised the CM’s vision and efforts MA&UD Minister for taking up green cover in the entire State.
Earlier, Dr B. Janardhan Reddy briefed about the 100 various innovative projects taken up by the GHMC for pollution free like Segregation of garbage waste and other major civic related issues for providing better civic infrastructure to the citizens.
