Woman thief held with gold worth 7.5 lakhs

Hyderabad: The Punjagutta police on Tuesday arrested a woman, who allegedly stole ornaments from women passengers in crowded RTC buses. Gold ornaments weighing 25 tolas worth Rs 7.5 lakh were seized from her.

The woman, identified as M Sunitha alias Durga, 40, a resident of Chandrayangutta and native of Narsaraopeta, Guntur, was a habitual pickpocket, who had committed various thefts in RTC buses and her target were women. She flicked handbags and travel bags from passengers in crowded buses by cutting their straps and handles, police said.

“She only targetted women passengers in RTC buses plying in the city. She observes all passengers while boarding or sitting or standing and targets those with bags. She either cuts the straps using a razor or unzips them and flicks valuables,” said A Venkateshwara Rao,West Zone, DCP adding that she would get down from the bus immediately and flee the spot.

“We have made a request to the TSRTC wing in the city asking to install surveillance cameras in buses behind the driver’s seat. This will help capture footages, as there are many offences being reported from the front portion of the bus where women sit,” police said.
