Hyderabad: A Rohingya couple suffered serious injuries after a knife attack, allegedly by a group from the same community, at their house in Balapur here in the wee hours of Tuesday.
According to the police, the incident happened around 2.30 am at the couple’s residence in Rock Town Colony of Balapur. Moulana Zakhid Ahmed (32) and his wife Khatiza Begum (28), were asleep when the group, reportedly comprising six persons, attacked them.
“The attack was around 2.30 am and we suspect it to be a revenge attack,” said M Sudhakar, Sub-Inspector, Balapur, adding that certain disputes involving Ahmed and other members of the community were suspected to have provoked the attack.
The couple, who have two sons and two daughters, were surviving with the income Ahmed made by teaching Urdu to children of Rohingya community here.
Based on a complaint filed by his relatives, police have registered a case under Section 307 (Attempt to murder) of Indian Penal Code and efforts are on to identify the gang.
“The suspects were communicating in Myanmarese. Based on this, we are questioning people from the community who were involved earlier in similar cases,” the SI said.
Ahmed suffered serious injuries on the lower abdomen and chest, and had to undergo a surgery, after which his condition was stated to be out of danger. His wife meanwhile has been shifted to the women patient ward in OGH and her condition was stated to be stable.
Police have seized a knife reportedly used in the attack and sent it to the Forensics laboratory.
